Some dissent on the bailout

Devilstower makes a case that the money needed to cover mortgages in default is far less than they've asked for... and not that much more than Wall Street has paid out in bonuses between 2000 and 2006. The rest of the money would go to buy their made up little swaps which were always a scam.

A bunch of economists don't think it's a great idea either.

Meanwhile, things are moving fast; it sounds like they're close to a deal. There are protests against the bailout scheduled for today, if you're so moved.

In campaign news, this isn't the first time McCain has tried to duck out of a debate. Why should he care if cancelling costs Ole Miss $5.5 million?

Which... he's not really doing anyway. Stay classy, John McCain.

P.S. -- I <3 Jon and Stephen so much.

McCain would be wise to not piss off Ole Miss, or better yet its conservative, Republican students and alumni, of which it has many. Ole Miss folk are just as touchy as Alabama or Georgia folk if you f*ck with their school (and their $$$).

Yeah, McCain would be wise not to hack off a lot of people he's been hacking off lately. Like 90% of the media. But, Obama says he's going to show up whether McCain does or not, and he'd be willing to do a town hall, an interview with Jim Lehrer, or some combination of the two. So Ole Miss won't be left entirely holding the bag, even if McCain turns out not to be bluffing.
