And I found today's inspiration: Dear History by Saul Williams:

Dear History... I have walked through your museums wondering how it is that greatness has lived and died all before my time. ...

Dear History, we no longer believe in you. We have invested our beliefs into the present time, the present moment, into our present opportunity to shift our reality into one that does not resemble the past. We stand on the shoulders of those that have fought and dreamed, and on the necks of those who are caught in time.

I can't get the flash embed to work on LJ, so go watch. It's good stuff.

Like I said yesterday, I'm making Get Out The Vote calls for Barack Obama. At this point, it's calls to Obama supporters to remind them to vote and bring others to the polls. You can go to barackobama.com to make calls.

If you want to do something else, probably the easiest way is to go to my.barackobama.com, find your nearest campaign office, and call or show up. (snolan has a comment about things you could be asked to do, including things that might be easier for us introverts.) You can use MyBarackObama to search for events and groups in your area. (I joined my town's group awhile back, and they send me emails about phonebanks and carpooling to New Hampshire.)

This is a Campaign Open Thread for introverts and others. Share what you're doing, what you want to do, what you're worried about doing, the latest, whatever.

I haven't started calling yet today.

It's not that it's hard. They do everything to make it easy for you. It's that it's hard for me. I don't like calling strangers on the phone. I'm not that great about calling people I know. This makes my pulse speed up; I have to psych myself up. I've been trying to psych myself up, but it's just so hard to start.

Ok. I can do this.

4 down, 21 to go.

The phonebanking system is pretty well designed. They set you up with a queue of 25 names and numbers. (That was one of the things I was worried about, how long a list they'd give you.) When you click on one, it brings up the screen with their name, gender, age, and address.

It has, all on one screen, that info, the person's polling place, a script, and radio buttons to mark their responses. The only snag I've hit is that I'm not always sure how to code people's responses, but I just pick the nearest thing. (Not wanting to say how they're voting = "other" for who they're voting for, etc.)

I went to a phone bank again today; the place was jumping as usual. I was there for about two hours and called about 100 numbers, although I usually had wrong numbers or left messages.

Wow, I haven't even finished my list of 25! (Although I've been getting actual humans.) Good job.

Yeah, the variances in call times is staggering. You can sometimes get a string of 100 or more numbers where no one answers; and other times you get real humans with every call and it takes a long time to get through 5 calls.

Good luck, and I hope that everyone you talk to is polite; it is not always that way, but mostly it is.
Try to be sympathetic, sometimes people are getting called a lot because it's hard to coordinate all the different phone banking efforts.

Well, a couple have been abrupt, but no one's been mean. I apologized to the guy who said he'd already been called today, and I kept a smile on my face the whole time.

It gets easier; I'm getting better at the spiel.

Well, I haven't finished my list, but the system (sensibly) stops providing numbers at 9pm.

I've discovered that it's actually easier for me to make one call after the other. I'd been taking breaks in between, to kinda recover... but if I make a bunch at once, I can kinda get a rhythm going.

I'll be doing GOTV calling (I think) tomorrow morning at the local DFL office.

I work at a call center, so I'm on the phone a lot. But I haven't done outbound on a regular basis in almost two years, so I'm a bit nervous. As long as no one calls Obama the n-word, I'll be fine. (I heard that happen, along with a "coon" when we were fundraising in the deep South.)

Yikes. I don't know about your call lists, but the ones I've been using are supposedly Obama supporters/leaners, so I hadn't even considered that possibility.

Good luck!

Those were people who had voted in the Democratic primary. Don't know what tomorrow's list will be, though.

I made forty calls today to Virginia, lots of wrong numbers and leaving messages, a few people who wouldn't tell me who they were voting for (so clearly not Obama), but a number of Obama supporters who said they were excited to vote for him and thanked me for calling, and then one woman who said "We are all voting for him, but you are the third person who has called today, and four people have come by the house, stop calling us!" She was nice, just exasperated.

I leave for Nevada tomorrow. Good luck with GOTV efforts, everyone!

Awesome. Yeah, I got one guy who said he'd been called already today, and several not-gonna-tell-mes.

Have a good trip!
